Celebrate Candlemas at St Peter’s

We are celebrating the ancient festival of Candlemas – the proper name for this day is “The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple” – at our Parish Eucharist on Sunday 29th January at 10am.
This is the nearest Sunday to February 2nd, when the Church remembers Mary and Joseph taking the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Simeon and Anna, who were both quite old, saw Jesus coming and recognised his importance. Simeon had been promised he wouldn’t die till he had seen God’s chosen Messiah and called Jesus “the light to the nations”, which is why candles are used in this celebration.
