Party in the Park 2008

Churches Together in South-West Leicester celebrated Pentecost in style on Sunday (May 11th), with a “Party in the Park”.

In brilliant sunshine, about 100 people (many wearing red for the fire of the Holy Spirit) came together in Braunstone Park, near Friar Lane & Braunstone Baptist Church at the top of Braunstone Avenue.

Our teamwork was tested as we put up two gazebos – one for the band and its electronics, and the other for the refreshments. The diesel generator hummed into life, the bouncy castle rose from the ground, and (after some technical hitches) the crowd started to sing, led by Steve Bradley and his band “Imaginary Friend”.

During the worship (compered by Chris Burch, complete with George Melly hat!) we launched our effort for Christian Aid Week, including St Peter’s very own “Quizaid” and chocolate tasting evening. We also launched our effort for “Hope 08”, clearing up litter and cleaning up Braunstone, and (from the Martyrs) taking part in the Riverside Festival at Bede Island on the 8th June.

The interval was a chance for party-goers to drink tea (or cold drinks) and eat the plentiful supply of cakes; also to watch the Christian Aid DVD and make two huge “Thank you” cards – one for the Police and one for the Fire Service – to thank them for their help in the Braunstone area over the last two or three months.

The final worship slot included prayers for the family in Heyford Road, whose house was burned down in April, killing two and injuring others. A moving end to a wonderful afternoon.
