The Friends of St Peter’s have just launched their appeal - for funds to help the church continue to pay its Administrator.

When Chris Burch was Area Dean, the diocese provided funds for 8 hours a week of admin time, which helped release Chris to spend more time round the parishes of the City Deanery. Now he has handed over that extra responsibility, and the transitional grant (kindly provided again by the diocese) runs out at the end of 2010. But the Administrator (Rosemary Nicholls) is so good, we can’t do without her!

Chris Burch writes in the Appeal letter - “We estimate that we need £2400 a year to continue to pay our administrator. As well as taking notes at some meetings, she keeps our baptism, wedding and funeral records straight, types our invoices and correspondence, and produces our weekly Welcome Sheet. We would like her to produce an annual Newsletter for you the Friends – a promise we made two years ago, and haven’t kept through lack of capacity!
Twenty standing orders of £10 per month would bring us the £2400 we’re aiming for. Gift Aid would enhance them by between 20% and 30%.”

If you know of anyone who’d like to subscribe, please contact Chris Burch in the first instance. We already have two subscribers at £10 a month - only 18 to go!

The 2010 Summer Festival took Food as its theme, and went down a storm.
We got off to a good start, with bright sunshine that lasted the whole day. (The previous 2 or 3 festivals have been wet.) We had invited a celebrity to open it - Braunstone resident Paige Murray (16), who was Leicester’s honoured Citizen of the year 2009/10. She mentioned in her speech her passion for bringing sporting opportunities to disabled young people.

Paige Murray declaring the Festival open

Several food stalls were there (including English cream teas and Caribbean curry), but the most atmospheric was the Lesta-Zim BBQ - you could smell it everywhere, and the taste was delicious!

Hot dog anyone?!

By the way, it’s still not too late to send in your recipes for the Braunstone Recipe Book…

All in all it was a brilliant community-building event, with old friends and new coming together and having a great day out.

Well, the 3-month Sabbatical has come to an end. On Sunday (Pentecost, the Feast of the Holy Spirit) I’m due to turn up at St Peter’s and preside at the Parish Eucharist – the first time since mid-February. (Although I’m breaking myself in gently – I’ve asked Roz to preach the sermon…)

It’s been a wonderful time. I’ve travelled in the USA and stayed in London. I’ve learned about US railroads and modelled British railways – I’ve listened to concerts and had a singing lesson, and have written two pieces that I hope people will enjoy at St Peter’s. One is a Psalm setting – Psalm 127 that begins – “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” The other was inspired by the sound of the diesel horns on the massive freight trains that rumble through Birmingham Alabama and Elkhart Indiana – it’s called “The Alabama Freight Train Blues.”

You may remember that I received a grant from the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, and I’ve dedicated the Psalm setting to them (I think the words are quite appropriate to an insurance company…). I’ve also had good support – financial and otherwise – from Leicester Diocese, and although I haven’t written a Psalm for them, I’m still very grateful!

In the last few weeks, while I’ve been laying track on my railway layout or writing music on my computer, I’ve realized that living without any demands from outside me is still quite demanding! There’s the danger of drifting – also the feeling that no one really knows what I’m doing. I’ve needed to make myself sit down and pray at least part of Morning Prayer every day. And I’ve seen how important it is to stay connected with people – whether family, friends or people I’m writing to. That’s why travelling and staying with family and friends has been so important.

One trip we made was to Italy, Roz’s and my holiday together. We flew out at the beginning of May (just missing the volcanic ash) and enjoyed a week of warm but rather wet weather near Lake Garda (in the north of Italy) while England was shivering in that cold snap. Then we flew back (just avoiding the second lot of volcanic ash) and I’ve spent the last few days writing music and making a control panel for the railway.

Here’s a photo from Verona, where Romeo and Juliet lived…

Best wishes

Chris.

For those of us feeling less energetic, there was a variety of crafts to explore.

Then we shared a time of worship, led by our visitors, which used a Celtic format….

Altogether, a wonderful afternoon, with wonderful people, and a reminder that in Christ we are all one, whether from the country or townies. We look forward to our next time together with our friends of Goadby Marwood.

This will be my last letter home, unless I find I can’t resist posting photos of my latest model railway! It’s nearly the end of the second part of my sabbatical, and I’ve enjoyed a music-filled Holy Week and Easter. One highlight was Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, a stunning performance (shattering in places) in which Rebecca played side-drum in the orchestra. Another was on Good Friday afternoon, when I went to a live performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, one of my favourite pieces, which I usually have to listen to on CD. On Easter Day Rebecca and I heard a superb choir (The Sixteen) sing pieces by Tallis and Byrd - wonderful!

Then Roz and I met at Bristol, where we were looked after by our friends Douglas and Ann Holt. Ann was off to China - hope she wasn’t caught up in the earthquake zone… And I had a session with Phil Wilby, who’s helping me with writing music.

I returned to London in time for the weekend, only to be whisked off to Norwich by Rosemary my sister, to sing with her in a choir, doing the Cathedral services on Saturday and Sunday. That’s something I’ve never done before, but it was fun.

The choir lines up before Sunday’s Eucharist

We met the Canon Pastor who took the funeral for our mother Rosetta - then, once back, I visited the British Museum and found myself right in front of the Rosetta Stone, a famous Egyptian stone with inscriptions in three ancient languages. Because they all said the same thing, scholars were able to translate from one to another - and that’s how they learned to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Next week I’m concentrating on writing out the music I’ve got in my head and on bits of paper. And I’m going to do some serious railway modelling - I’ve even got a commission from a friend to make him an engine shed! In case you weren’t sure - I’m having a ball! (And no, I don’t have any plans to move parishes…)

Best wishes

For our Easter celebration we were privileged to have Archdeacon Richard Atkinson leading us on a journey of love, from Palm Sunday to Easter Day.

Richard took hymns ancient and modern to guide our thoughts in exploring the familiar and wonderful story of Christ’s passion. We came to appreciate once more that wonderful love that God has for us, as He expressed it through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

In addition to the two Sunday services of Palm Sunday and Easter Day, Richard also led a series of meditations during Holy Week, leading up a celebration of Christ’s last meal at the Passover. We, too, shared a passover meal on Maundy Thursday, which included the washing of feet - a symbol of Christ’s service to us and of our need to serve others.

On Good Friday the children prepared our Easter garden, complete with the crosses and the tomb. Following that, there were further meditations into the afternoon on what the death of Jesus means to us.

On Easter Eve we met outside the church, lit the Easter candle, and processed into the church to share a candle-lit service of Light and Renewal.

Easter Day was a joyful occasion, including making much noise as we sang the Gloria, giving thanks to God for our Risen and Living Lord!!!
